Israel Barrantes

Dr. Barrantes holds a degree in Biology, with additional predoctoral studies in Systems Engineering and Biochemistry.

He completed his doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg and Otto von Guericke University (OvGU), supported by fellowships from the Max Planck Society and OvGU. His Ph.D. work applied computational methods to uncover the molecular mechanisms of cell differentiation in protists. From 2014 to 2017, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), investigating Staphylococcus infections across populations in Northern Europe. In 2017, Dr. Barrantes joined the Institute for Biostatistics and Informatics in Medicine and Aging Research (IBIMA) at Rostock University Medical Center, where since 2020 he has served as Staff Scientist and Team Leader, heading the Research Group in Translational Bioinformatics. His research employs multi-omics approaches —including genomics, transcriptomics, and microbiomes— to identify biomarkers in infection biology and aging.
